I have had lymphadema since I was 19 and am now 48. The only time it affects my lifestyle is when I don't pay attention to what I'm supposed to do.
Whenever possible - sit with your legs elevated - as high as possible at the end of the day.
Whenever possible - where your Jobst - or other compression stockings - especially when you exercise. It really keeps the swelling down.
Women - don't wear heels - wear comfortable shoes.
Don't let yourself get too hot - excessive internal heat just makes you swell more and feel more miserable.
Swim - exercising in the water feels great - and you don't feel as swollen!
Bike ride - the pumping action is pretty good!
Find a doctor who can prescribe treatment with a physical therapist. Have the swelling pumped out of your leg - get measured for a compression stocking - wear the compression stocking - don't stop moving around or exercising. In the evening - when no one is looking if you are self-conscious - raise your legs way above your heart and let the swelling of the day drain. I actually lay backwards on a recliner on bad days - that way I can elevate it at whatever height I need.
Don't stand in one place too long - move!!
Don't sit too long -- move!!
There are massage therapist who specialize in lymphatic draining (there's a special name to the technique I can't remember right now). It also helps alot!
